We have to ask it again...

Does anyone really know what they are doing when it comes to skincare?

This is EXACTLY why we decided to partner up with a hair and makeup artist (MUA) for all of our photoshoots. But not just any MUA... Artistee Lane Makeup Studio!

We didn't choose to partner with Monica (the owner of Artistee Lane) just because she is one of our favorite people in this world. We chose to partner with her and her team because they are truly one of a kind. They care more about sanitation and safety than anyone else we know in this industry, plus they take great pride in providing the most unforgettable, incredible experience possible. We are SO proud to have Monica and her team as a part of ours.

We recently asked Monica to share her pre-photoshoot skincare routine with us so that we could share it with you here and as we help prepare you for your session. Here's what she had to say:

Quick Disclaimer: You know your skin and your body best. Take everything we say here with a grain of salt and do what you know works for your skin and body. When trying new products or routines, be gentle and cautious until you know how your skin and body react to the change.

A GOOD SKINCARE ROUTINE IS SIMPLE, GENTLE, AND BUILT FOR YOU.

Good Skin Starts with Proper Hydration

Okay, okay... we know you've heard this a billion times before. But just hang with us for a second:

Proper hydration:

  • Tightens Skin

  • Prevents Wrinkles

  • Improves Overall Complexion

  • Reduces Puffiness, Irritation, and Itchiness

  • Flushes Toxins From Your Skin, Effectively Reducing Acne

  • Helps You Heal (Especially When Sunburnt)

It doesn't just make you look better on the outside, it makes you FEEL better on the inside. Adequate amounts of water on a frequent and consistent basis:

  • Maximizes Physical Performance

  • Affects Energy Levels (and Brain Function)

  • Prevents and Treats Headaches AND Hangovers

  • Improves Focus

Unfortunately, most of us tend to downplay the role of water in our lives and forget to keep up with our hydration habits. If you have to, try setting an alarm to remind you to drink water throughout the day. Track your water intake throughout the day using an app. Buy yourself a fancy water bottle if you have to. Photoshoot or not - we should all be making proper hydration a habit!

Try your best to avoid sugary drinks before your big day and top your water habit off with a series of more nutritious food choices in the days leading up to your session.

All of these intentional choices combined are going to help your skin GLOW!

Moisturize Like There is No Tomorrow

Hydration helps create glowing skin from below. Moisturization helps top it off!

Try to at least moisturize once in the morning and once at night.

We can't mention moisturization without mentioning the rest of your skincare routine.

It's a lot more simple than you'd think, actually!

Every skincare routine should start with a cleanser, moisturizer, and some sunscreen. Use the cleanser and moisturizer morning and night, or however often you think your skin needs it. Apply sunscreen every single morning to help protect your skin - and don't be afraid to reapply later in the day!

About Those Beauty Treatments

You know - waxing, facials, and things of that sort.

For some people, these are non-negotiable before a big event. We get it!

However, we ask that you plan these treatments far enough in advance to give your skin ample time to heal and return to its normal state. We'd hate for your skin to break out just in time for your session because of some beauty treatments you had a few days prior.

For some people, a few days in advance is perfect, and for others, at least two weeks is needed to allow any breakouts to heal. Proceed with caution regardless - especially if you've never had the treatment before.

That's it!

It's really that simple!

Just like Monica said - a good skincare routine is simple, gentle, and built for you!

On the day of your shoot, do what you need to do to prepare your skin and body. If you'd prefer to apply the base of your makeup - go ahead! Be sure to apply a good amount of lip balm and lotion the morning of to help prepare your skin for Monica and her makeup team!

We urge you to warn us in advance if you have any allergies or sensitivities to certain products so that we can make adjustments and preparations.

Beyond that - you're just about ready for your big day!

Still haven't booked a session with us? Let's make that happen! Be sure to check out Artistee Lane in the process! Until then, stay hydrated, moisturized, and be gentle to yourself and your skin!
